Meet Dr. H

Understanding changes everything.

For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated by people.

Not just by behavior—but by the stories behind behavior.

Why do two children approach the same challenge so differently?

Why does one child thrive in an environment where another struggles?

What strengths are hiding beneath anxiety, frustration, or school difficulties?

And perhaps most importantly, how can we help children understand themselves in ways that build confidence rather than shame?

Those questions have shaped my career.

For more than two decades, I've had the privilege of working with thousands of children, adolescents, families, educators, and professionals. Every evaluation, consultation, and conversation has reinforced one simple truth:

Understanding changes everything.

When we understand how a child's brain works, behavior begins to make sense. Challenges become opportunities for growth. Families become more confident. Children begin to see themselves differently.

That is why I love psychological assessment. Many people think of testing as a way to identify problems. I see it as an opportunity to discover strengths, answer difficult questions, and create a clear path forward. Every child has a unique pattern of abilities, challenges, interests, and potential. My goal is to help families see the whole child—not just a diagnosis.

Over the years, these experiences also inspired me to create The Control Tower Model™, a practical way of helping children and adults understand executive functioning, and Wagon Wheels and Ladders™, a framework for understanding different thinking styles. These ideas have grown into books, workshops, speaking engagements, and educational resources designed to make complex psychological concepts easier to understand and apply in everyday life.

In addition to my clinical practice, I am an author, speaker, and educator who is passionate about translating research into practical strategies that parents, educators, therapists, and children can actually use. Whether I'm writing a children's book, speaking at a conference, leading a parent workshop, or completing a comprehensive evaluation, my goal is always the same: to help people see children through the lens of understanding rather than judgment.

My professional journey has included work in business, marketing, ministry, therapy, and psychology. That diverse background has taught me that every person has a story worth hearing and strengths worth discovering. It also reminds me that growth is rarely linear. We all learn, adapt, and continue building our own Control Towers throughout life.

Today, I continue to conduct comprehensive evaluations, consult with families and schools, write books, and speak to audiences across the country. It remains one of the greatest privileges of my life to help children better understand themselves—and to help the adults who love them do the same.

Thank you for visiting. I hope you'll explore the books, blogs, and resources throughout this website. Whether you're a parent, educator, therapist, or fellow professional, I hope you'll leave with one simple idea: Understanding changes everything.
